Experiment 1 - the tag war

It is commonly known that the different html-tags are given weight by the search engines algorithms. But which one is the most important? In this experiment we intend to find out what are the facts.

Title, meta description, meta keywords, meta title, h1 and h2 test.

In the first test we will check the weight given to the meta’s title, description, keywords and meta-title. The test also covers h1 and h2 tags.

The documents has the keyword in:

  1. Title-tag.
  2. Meta-description.
  3. Meta-keywords.
  4. Meta-title.
  5. H1-tag.
  6. H2-tag.

The body has a ≈1000 character text in all cases without the keyword in it.

All documents are located here.

Check the positions in Google or Yahoo or in Live.

To see the actual results, remove the numbers 123 from the end and hit search again.

The purpose of this test

What we are trying to prove in this test is what tag is given the highest weight of all the typical “seo” tags. We will regularly check the results in all three search engines, and see over time what factors are more important. Monthly we will update the findings we see so you can get a clear picture of what is the facts regarding these factors when it comes to onpage seo.

The results:

March 6th 2008:

Google
When checking the results today we can see that only case 1, 5 and 6 has been cached in Google. Case 1 wins. That means that the title tag is the single most imortant tag for the rankings. It also means that case 2, 3 and 4 is not given any weight at all. To some of you it might be surprising that meta-keywords and meta description carries no weight whatsoever.

Yahoo
In Yahoo the results are quite different. Case 1 wins followed by 3, 6 and 2. What might be a bit surprising here is that the document with the H1-tag has not even been cached by Yahoo so far.

Live
In Live only two documents has been cached so far. Case 1 wins followed by case 6.
